The king commanded his labourers to dig deep into the mountain. They did as they were told and discovered an underground lake, just as predicted. Once drained, the red and white dragons that lay sleeping there awoke and began a fierce battle, with the red dragon ultimately defeating the white. The boy then prophesised that the red dragon triumph was representative of the Britons future victory over the Saxons, who were symbolised by the white dragon. Subsequently the boy’s life was spared. Legend has it the boy later became known as the great magician Myrddin Emrys – or Merlin, as he is called in English.
