Geralt meets with the king of Vizima, Foltest, to cure the king’s daughter of a curse that transformed her into a monstrous striga, who now terrorizes the town, for a valuable reward. Foltest insists Geralt not harm his daughter-turned-striga, but soon allows Geralt to kill the striga if Geralt decides that that the striga cannot be cured back to her human form. Geralt spends the night at the old palace, which houses the striga. Lord Ostrit, a magnate from Novigrad, arrives and tries to bribe Geralt into running away. Ostrit wants to use the striga situation as proof of Foltest’s inability to rule, convincing the inhabitants to support Novigrad’s rule of Vizima over Foltest’s. Geralt refuses and knocks Ostrit out to use him as bait for the striga. Geralt fights with the striga and soon overcomes her, despite the striga’s resistance to silver, which normally easily defeats monsters. Geralt binds his wounds and faints, having earned his reward. Power, strength, violence and a strong link to the terrain the people that created them live in, dragons from Scandinavia, the British Isles and Northern Europe usually depict a look that exudes menace and malevolence. This incredible design features the dragon Jormungandr intertwined with the famed world tree Yggdrasil and eating its own tail. There is literally no part of the reverse face that isnt packed with ultra high relief detail. The insert, made of Azurite, is coloured like a view of the Earth from space and is an integral part of the mythology. Dragons have permeated many cultures mythology, possibly through the early discovery of fossils after all, how else could they explain fossilized teeth and bones? Norse mythology is no different, with four main creatures referenced in their literature. Niohoggr, (Malice Striker) is a dragon (or serpent) that gnaws away at the root of Yggdrasil, the fabled world tree. Described in Prose Edda and Poetic Edda as gnawing at the roots from below, it was one of many creatures that inhabited Yggdrasil. Jormungandr, (Huge Monster), also known as the Midgard (World) Serpent, is a sea serpent and said to be the offspring of Loki and the giantess Angrboða. Thrown into the great ocean that encircles Midgard by Odin. It grew so large that it encircled the earth and could grasp its own tale. When it releases its tail, Ragnarök will begin. Fafnir is a son of the dwarf king Hreidmar, and after being affected by the curse of Andvaris ring and gold, Fafnir became a dragon and was slain by Sigurd. Its suggested that Tolkien based the dragon Smaug on the legend of Fafnir. Unnamed dragon in the 13th century book by Saxo Grammaticus, Gesta Danorum (The Deeds of the Danes), recounts the tale of the legendary king Frode I, who is said to have killed a venomous dragon that lived in a cave guarding a huge horde of riches. This is the 2nd issue in the Poland Mint series called Great Commanders. After the huge success of Spartacus Slave Revolt, we are pleased to present the 2019 Leonidas, once again 2 ounces of antique finished, high relief legal tender of Niue. Leonidas was the leader of Sparta in the last decade of his life. Armed with a round shield, a spear and a short iron sword, he sowed fear in the enemy’s ranks. He was the leader of an army of 6 – 7 thousand soldiers, which managed to stop the 300 thousand Persian soldiers commanded by Xerxes in the Thermopil Gorge. This was the most important battle of the Greek-Persian war. Leonidas and most of his soldiers died in the battle, but it gave the Greeks time to gather a larger army and face the enemy forces. Reverse: In stunning high relief, Leonidas is shown fighting the Persian army. In the background you can see a small but brave Spartan army. Particularly noteworthy is the selective plating of red gold, which imitates the blood of warriors. The coin is also decorated with a three-millimeter high relief, which shows every detail of the design.
