The painting is a tondo, or round painting, of 118 cm. It presents the Virgin Mary sitting in a golden throne in a three-quarter pose. This song is the Benedictus, which Zachariass sang as a thanksgiving song for the birth of his son. On the right page of the book, Mary is writing the Magnificat, which is the song of praise and thanks to God that she sings during her visit to her kinswoman Elizabeth.
