MCM Picks: Memorial Day. The silver bullion coin series dedicated to the Hawksbill Turtle was introduced by the New Zealand Mint in 2010. The annually issued series began as a release of the Fiji Islands as the Silver Taku. In 2014, the issuing nation of the series was shifted to Niue, with its imagery remaining unchanged. The name of the series was changed to Hawksbill Turtle, since “taku” is the word for the sea creature in the Fijian language. Hawksbill turtles live in the ocean shallows, and are known for their vibrantly colored and intricately patterned shells. Each of the 10 2021 Niue Hawksbill Turtle coins in the lot are struck from 1 Troy oz. The bullion coins measure 40.50 mm in diameter. The coins each feature an attractive Brilliant Uncirculated finish. Stunningly Rendered Hawksbill Turtle Design. Obverse: A right facing portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is located on the obverse. Surrounding inscriptions include “ELIZABETH II, ” “NIUE, ” “TWO DOLLARS” and 2021. The effigy, created in 1998, is the work of British artist Ian Rank-Broadley, who has been a member of the prestigious Royal British Society of Sculptors since 1989. Reverse: A Hawksbill Turtle is illustrated on the reverse swimming in the Pacific Ocean, surrounded by an array of bubbles and the rough sand of the ocean floor. The creature is delightfully patterned with a swirly stylized shell and leather-like ornamentation on its head and appendages. “TURTLE” is inscribed in a smooth crescent shape near the coin’s rim, with FINE SILVER. 999 1 OZ engraved in the textured sand. 10 Spectacular Brilliant Uncirculated Silver Coins.
